General:
Perennial herb from a taproot; stems single, spreading long-hairy, 40-80 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal and lowermost stem leaves long-stalked, 7-20 cm long, 2.5-7 cm wide, the blades elliptic or egg-shaped, straight, appressed-hairy; middle and upper leaves reduced upwards, unstalked, clasping, becoming more oblong or egg-shaped, alternate, entire.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 3-several wands (false racemes) atop a long, naked stalk; corollas funnel-shaped, blue; petals fused at base into a squat (to 3 mm long) tube that spreads (5-8 mm wide) at top to 5 rounded lobes, with 5 oblong, yellow bulges at the throat; mature calyces 1-2.5 mm long.
Fruits:
Nutlets 4, clustered together but spreading apart at maturity, 3.5-5 mm long, egg-shaped, covered with barb-tipped prickles.

Habitat / Range

Mesic forest openings in the lower montane zone; infrequent in C and N BC; E to NF and S to N MI, IN and CT.
